14 October, St Mary’s Church Hall, 7.30pm.

Four Hundred Years of Stroudwater Mills: a talk by Ann Taylor.

The Stroud area has for centuries been a centre for the woollen industry, not least because of the fast-flowing streams that provided power for mills. It was once famous for military uniforms and quality Saville Row material and is still a dominant force in the world markets for tennis and snooker cloth.

Ann Taylor will explain the processes involved in producing fine woollen cloth and trace the changes in the mills resulting from the Industrial Revolution and the introduction of synthetic fibres.

Ann is a retired Education Officer from Stroud Museum and a busy volunteer and Trustee of the Textile Trust. She was also one of the organisers of the beautiful walled garden at Stroud Museum.

Thornbury Society meetings take place on the second Tuesday of the month from October through to May.

Membership for the season is £12. Guests welcome, £3.50 per visit. The speaker will have an interval during their talk when refreshments will be available.

The Society doesn't publish an email address. To get in touch, please use the contact form on our website.
