Thornbury Arts Festival: Thornbury Town Walk

St Mary's Church, Thornbury

Thornbury Town Walk - God, Gossip, Scandal and Riot

Start at St. Mary's Church

Did you know that in the past our town experienced religious dissent, labour strikes verging on rebellion, violent arguments between parishioners in the church, effigy burning, assault, affray, monster processions and people power?

There are accounts of Victorian toy boys, dodgy doctors and teachers, poaching cases, hangings, exploding canons, drunkenness and other vices, links to the slave trade and even “most horrid, barbarous and bloody murder”. A quiet market town? No chance.

Join Meg Wise from Thornbury and District Museum on this approximately two-hour guided walk to hear the sometimes surprising stories from the town’s history. Not for young children or the faint hearted! Followed by tea/coffee and cake.

Price: £10.00. Click below for details or phone 07591 030785.
