The National Garden Scheme is proud to say that 80% of money raised through opening gardens goes to health charities.
In our area, Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath there are almost 40 gardens to choose from, all described in the local 'Yellow book.' In South Gloucestershire 7 very different gardens open to visitors providing 'Great Gardens, Great Cakes!' Some will open for groups, at a time to suit you, 'By Arrangement'.
Details of all the gardens can be found on the National Garden Scheme website below, or you can download the smartphone app. On both you can search for gardens opening within the distance you are prepared to travel. So why not go ahead and plan the gardens you would like to visit?
The huge benefits of gardens and gardening to health and well being are now well recognised. You may feel you would like to become involved in this inspiring organisation. It's possible to volunteer in a small way by helping with serving teas, or you may even feel that your own garden could be enjoyed by others. Seeing the pleasure on visitors' faces and sharing your endeavours with others, whilst helping the NGS charities, has a huge 'feel good factor.'

Daggs Allotments at the top of the High Street are administered for the people of Thornbury by Thornbury Town Trust.
Thomas Dagg gave the field to Thornbury in 1546, so we tend what must be some of the oldest allotments in the country.
There are 120 allotments, and the Association has over 100 members. It organises social events, monthly newsletters, and an Allotment Shop.
Gillingstool Primary School's plot offers pupils the chance to grow and eat their own produce.
Membership costs just a couple of pounds a year, and brings many benefits. You don't need to be a plot holder to become a member. We have discounted seeds, competitive prices on gardening items, guest speakers and visits.
If you would like to become a member, or be added to the waiting list for a plot, contact the clerk to the Town Trust via the link below.
We meet for demonstrations and practice classes at Thornbury Methodist Church Hall, at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of the month. New members and visitors are always welcome at either the demonstration or practice nights. We are affiliated to NAFAS. For more information click below.

We meet Fridays at 8pm in the old scenery store in The Chantry garden. Most scales, gauges, companies and tractions are accounted for and membership boasts a wide range of skills. Although we are only a small club, we are flourishing.
Over the years we have built a number of layouts to most of the usual scales and gauges, including (a long since retired) model of Thornbury Station. Exhibiting these layouts has allowed the club to travel around the local area and, on a couple of occasions, further afield.
We hold our own exhibition in November, and as member of the Association of Model Railway Clubs, Wales & West of England we also take part in their exhibition held at Thornbury Leisure Centre on May Bank Holiday Weekends.
For over 60 years our Thornbury Art Club has been a place for like-minded people who love to paint together and share experiences in a friendly atmosphere.
We invite you to come and try Thornbury Art Club, a welcoming community where individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to share their creative passions. Whether you have a long-standing interest in art or are completely new to it, you will find a place here. We hold Studio Groups on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Here you can enjoy your painting and crafting in the company of fellow members, learning from one another, sharing stories and experiences that you won't find on any on-line platform. Non-Members are welcome to visit during our studio hours to see what we are up to and to ask about memberships in person.
Every 4th Tuesday of the month we hold an evening Club Night when a variety of professional artists will visit to demonstrate their art skills and style. During the tea break we can catch up with each other, chat to the artist about materials and techniques and items for sale. Non- members are welcome at just £6 on the door.
We have started a Saturday morning Sketchers Group where we meet outdoors for a relaxing sketching session then go on to have tea and coffee in a local cafe. We try to car share where possible. Our club is open to everyone, regardless of artistic experience or medium. Some of our members just paint for fun, while others are successfully running their own art businesses. Come and give us a try, we’re always keen to have new members.

Thornbury University of the Third Age (U3A) was founded in 1997 and is now one of the largest organisations in the town with over 1500 members.
The title ‘University’ can be misleading as members do not require any qualifications to join and there are no examinations to sit or awards made. It provides a wide range of educational, social and leisure activities and is an excellent way of meeting people and making friends. There is no age limit on membership but you need to have ceased full-time employment as most groups meet during the day, either in members’ homes or halls in the local area.
We meet on the first Friday in each month at 8pm in the Armstrong Hall. We stage three commercial wine tastings a year, including wines possibly more expensive than one would normally buy. For these evenings we charge between £3 and £5 depending on actual costs of wine and light supper.
Our other evenings involve slide shows and talks. These are funded from the annual subscription of £12. The Christmas meeting is at an hotel with dinner and dance, and the summer event is often a Mystery Coach Tour to an out of the way pub.
Unlike when the Wine Circle began in the Seventies, home made wine is not often made these days, but some grape and elderberry wine is used at BBQs, and mulled wine at Christmas.

The University of the Third Age is a self-help, self-managed lifelong learning co-operative for people no longer in full time work, providing opportunities for members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun.
We meet every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 9-45am to 12noon in the Town Hall, Chipping Sodbury. We are a fun loving group who enjoy a variety of speakers, chatting to friends, and joining in various groups, including gardening, knit and natter, walking, art, also day trips and our very popular luncheon club.
